Can I get a decent job in Seattle or Portland with a Bachelor's in General Studies?

I will be graduating in May from a public school in Oklahoma. I want to move to the pacific northwest, Portland or Seattle, and eventually, after a year or two, further my education. I’m getting a B.S. in General Studies and am wondering what the job market would be like up there. I have very little work experience of any type, two call centers, one 8 months and the other 9 months, with large gaps due to my school schedule. What kind of problems might I have finding work up there? I could always continue customer service, but I’d like to grow up a bit. I’ve thought about social work, but I’m really clueless what I could actually do with my degree.

I hate to shoot down your dream of living in Seattle but, it is very expensive to live here. So, unless you have specific job experience or a technical degree, I would advise against it. The job market here is very competitive, since it is a desirable place to live. If you come out here, get stuck in a job where you can just squeak by, it will be very difficult for you to get more education. My recommendation would be to further your education first and then move to Seattle.

No. you will have a difficult time finding a decent job there, my sister moved to portland and it took her 3 years to find a decent job and she has a masters in English. If you really want a job move east to NJ, PA, NY. lots of jobs here.

Well a education is better then no education, but that is something you need to ask your advisor/counselor/career counselor about….You are worth more then someone who has no formal education, but then again you aren’t specifically trained in any area at all…..if i were you, i’d work and continue with school to get specialized in something…like business or medicine or teaching or nursing, something……..there are ALOT of medical jobs/teaching jobs/technical jobs out there that need positions filled….please don’t be a psychologist, America has enough of those, plus it’s a shit major as far as getting a decent, salary job. Anyway, I would work till I figured out what i wanted to specialize in. I’m not sure if i’d move far away from my home state if I were to finish specializing in something….anyway good luck!

A BA in general studies is a liberal arts degree and it will give you entry to many fields. However, you will be competing with people who have degrees in those fields. So for for example if social work is your interest those candidates who have a BSW will have a leg up on you. Now a degree is no guarantee – who you are and how you conduct yourself in an interview will make a big difference if you can get your foot in the door.
